Frequently Asked Questions

Who can play?
Any female affiliated with the University of Chicago: students, alumnae, faculty, staff, etc.

How good do I have to be?
We take players of all levels, and strongly encourage beginners to join. If you've always wanted to play ice hockey but never had the opportunity before, join the team! We'll teach you everything you need to know to get started, including skating, stick-handling, and game play. The team is all about having fun and enjoying the great sport of hockey.

How often do we play?
We start in mid-October and play through March. During that time we typically have one practice (usually Monday or Tuesday evening) and one game (usually Saturday or Sunday evening) each week. In the spring, we participate in regional tournaments like the Walleye Chop and the Brew City Showdown. During the off-season, many of our members sign up for spring and summer leagues hosted by local rinks. Check out our Schedule tab above to get a better idea of what our calendar looks like.

Which teams do we compete against?
Our team plays in a league called the WCHL (Women's Central Hockey League). We are currently grouped into Division 4 - South, and compete against other all-female recreational teams within our skill bracket.

Where do we play?
Most of our games are at rinks in the greater Chicagoland area (Evanston, Homewood-Flossmoor, Northbrook, etc). Occasionally we travel to surrounding states like Iowa and Missouri for required league games. We are actively looking into making Johnny's IceHouse in downtown Chicago our official location for practices and home games. Don't worry if you don't have a car; we carpool to all of our events, and always make sure there's room for everyone.

What do I need to play?
Although every player must have a full set of hockey equipment to play in games, you don't have to commit to all of that up front. We can lend you some gear to try at first, and are happy to help you find everything you need to get started. Used equipment from stores like Play It Again Sports is often a great option for new players.

How much does it cost?
While we do receieve a certain amount of funding from the University, we still need to collect dues from our players to cover the cost of ice time, referees, league registration, etc. Dues are $100 per quarter. The cost for a full season (Fall Quarter + Winter Quarter) is $200. All players must also register individually with USA Hockey each year. This $53 fee helps support our regional association and provides insurance coverage for players in the event that they are injured on the ice.

How do I sign up?
Send an email to our team captain at uofchockey@gmail.com to let her know you're interested. Players must be registered and rostered by the end of October to be eligible for league games, but newcomers are encouraged to join throughout the year as practices and exhibition games are open to all.
